Oil extraction and public attitudes: A conjoint experiment in Turkana, Kenya

This study examines the impacts of economic, social and environmental consequences oil extraction on public opinion in an economically politically marginalised community northern Kenya. We conduct a conjoint experiment sample 801 respondents urban semi-urban locations Turkana county find that our strongly support overall. Although priming about costs decreases local residents’ for extraction, decrease is so small community's perception remains positive. However, significantly higher among living neighbourhoods distant from wells operation relative to those who live close sites. In addition responses economic benefits also vary by respondents’ distance wells. Contrary existing literature, we do not evidence strong resentment toward county.
